Arrested pregnancy
For several reasons, some pregnancies cannot be continued (arrested pregnancy, incomplete miscarriage, blighted ovum, anomalies, etc.). In some cases, an intervention by instruments is necessary. If your doctor has made the diagnosis and suggested a dilation-aspiration procedure (often called curettage) to empty the contents of the uterus, you can contact us to make an appointment.
We understand the emotions that this situation can make you experience and our team will be there to support you with gentleness and empathy. Our team is also aware of the concerns that such a procedure can raise and our concern is to offer you a comfortable, safe and humane experience.
The intervention by instruments at the Fémina medical clinic requires only one visit lasting an average of 3 hours. The intervention is done by the dilation and aspiration method and lasts approximately 8 to 10 minutes. Thanks to the medications used during the procedure, the pain is minimal, often non-existent, and the majority of patients have no memory of the procedure.
During the procedure, you will have a warm nurse by your side who is attentive to your physical and emotional needs. A recovery period of approximately one hour in our rest room will be necessary after the procedure. Your companion will not be able to attend the procedure. The next day, you will be able to resume your usual activities, but you will have to avoid intense exercise. For a period of 24 hours after the procedure, you will have to refrain from driving a vehicle. This procedure does not affect the woman’s fertility. It is possible to get pregnant again in the following weeks.
- Have your valid Quebec health insurance card (RAMQ), a transitional certificate from the RAMQ or your PFSI paper. This will ensure that you receive our services free of charge. If you do not have a RAMQ card, you will have to pay a fee.
- Have the report from your referring physician.
- Let us know if you have any health issues.
Before your appointment, make sure to:
- Complete the online health questionnaire.
- You need to be fasting 3 h before the appointment (no foor or liquid). You may take your regular prescribed medication, if any, with a small sip of water.
- No alcohol or drugs 24 h before and after your appointment.
- DO NOT urinate 1 h before your appointment (a urine sample will be required for sexually transmitted infection screening).
- Do not drive a motor vehicle for 24 h following your abortion.
- You must be accompanied for your return home.
- Once your appointment has been scheduled with the receptionist, you will receive a text message a few days before the appointment date to confirm. You will need to confirm your attendance or cancel the appointment by following the instructions in the message.
Once you arrive, after reading the pre- and post-intervention information documents, you will be called by the nurse for a preparatory consultation. This is an opportunity to validate your medical questionnaire and answer your questions.
Shortly after the consultation with the nurse, the nurse from the rest room will call you to prepare you for the procedure. She will give you a gown and you will be able to use the bathroom to change. A urine sample will be required to perform the test to detect chlamydia and gonorrhea (STIs). Then, she will show you a place to put your clothes and a comfortable bed to lie down while waiting to be called.
In the intervention room, an ultrasound will first be performed. Once the ultrasound is finished, you will be asked to get into the gynecological position. In addition, a catheter will be placed in your arm to administer medication adapted to the needs of each patient. This catheter will be left in place until you leave the clinic. All this to ensure that the procedure takes place in the safest possible conditions. It is with the help of this catheter that the nurse will take a few drops of blood to determine part of your blood group, called the Rhesus factor (Rh) if you are more than 8 weeks pregnant. About 15% of the population does not have this factor. If this is your case, you are Rh negative and the nurse will administer an immunoglobulin solution (which is similar to a vaccine) to prevent you from producing antibodies that could harm a future pregnancy.
The vast majority of patients receive, through the catheter, a dose of analgesic in order to reduce as much as possible the pain and/or anxiety that may occur during the procedure. Each patient has specific needs and we are very attentive to them. Rest assured that we use the safest medications at doses that we adapt according to the situations.
The doctor will begin the procedure with a gynecologic exam by inserting a warmed speculum into the vagina. Then comes the local anesthesia which will numb the cervix. The technique used, dilation and aspiration, is the one that is recognized as being the safest. The procedure lasts approximately 8 to 10 minutes.
After an intervention following a pregnancy loss, it is important to take care of yourself physically, but also emotionally. It is normal to experience and feel various emotions such as sadness, anger, incomprehension, etc. It is also possible that you do not feel like having sex, it is important to respect your rhythm. Each woman reacts differently. Physically, we suggest that you rest well the same day. The majority of women are ready to resume their normal activities the next day. It is better to wait a week for very intense physical activities. If you feel that you need additional support, you can contact us or refer to our “Resources” section.
